Swarna Prashana – An Ayurvedic Way to Boost Child’s Immunity

Swarna Prashana

The most difficult part of parenting is to see your child sick. Although parents can easily spend nights taking care of their children, but seeing their child sick is quite emotionally draining. Unfortunately we all come in this world with a weak immune system and it seems like getting sick is part of our job description as a child. But then it does not have to be necessarily like that. Every parent would love to have a magic potion that can build a child’s immunity so much so that their child is always protected from all kinds of germs and viruses. And thankfully due to ancient Indian ayurvedic practices, there does exist one such magic potion: Swarna Prashana. Let’s look at how Swarna Prashana works and what are the various benefits (or side effects if any) of using the same.

What is Swarna Prashana?

Swarna Prashana (Suvarna Prashana) also known as Swarna bindu prashan is an unique Ayurvedic preparation that is known to enhance the immune power of human body. Swarna means gold and Prashana refers to act of consuming. The act of consuming noble metal gold "Swarna Prashana (Suvarna Prashana)" is considered as one of the 16 essential Sanskars (regimens) described for improving overall health in children.

What is it made of?

Swarna Prashana (Suvarna Prashana) is made using swarna bhasma (gold ash) mixed with honey and cow ghee containing herbal extracts like vacha, brahmi, shankh pushpi, all of which show strong immune boosting properties.

Gold, a precious metal, is known to boost immunity as well as enhance memory. As it cannot be consumed in metallic form, it is converted to a powdered form (Swarna Bhasma) using a special process.

Honey is another important ingredient in Swarna Prashana. Honey is prepared by collection of pollen grains. Since pollen grains are known to cause allergic reactions, consumption of honey in very low doses is believed to gradually prepare the body to fight against other allergens. Honey is also known to act against inflammation and improve digestion.

Ghee (a type of clarified butter) mixed with herbs, is the third main ingredient of Swarna Prashana. Ghee has a unique property of acquiring medicinal properties of herbs mixed in it and thus it acts as an effective medium for the preparation.

Who should take Swarna Prashana?

According to Ayurveda our body needs to get right nourishment to support proper physical and mental development that can sustain till the old age. Swarna Prashan is therefore recommended to be taken immediately after birth and continued till the age of 16 years.

One should avoid giving Swarna Prashana to children if they have cold or fever.
